BES Server System Requirements

BES Server System Requirements

  • The BES Server should be run on a dedicated server computer with 1 GHZ+ CPU and 256 MB+ of RAM with 10 GB+ of free disk space.
  • The BES Server should have a fresh installation of Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server Edition or Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition operating system with no untrusted logins.
  • For Windows 2000 computers, Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 or higher is required.
  • The BES Server must have Internet access.
  • The firewall/proxy cannot strip out unknown HTTP headers when the BES Server connects to the BigFix Fixlet servers at http://sync.bigfix.com on port 80.
  • All BES Clients should be able to connect to the BES Server using the HTTP protocol on the specified port (default port is 52311).
  • The BES Server should be able to send UDP messages on the specified port (default port is 52311) to all the BES Clients.
  • MSDE 2000 or SQL Server 2000 with non-default instances must not be installed (installations with default instances are ok). If no database is detected, the installer will prompt you to install MSDE 2000.
  • The BES Server must be accessible from each BES Console using an ODBC connection.

Recommended Server Specifications

# of BES Clients CPU RAM Hard Drive (min 10 GB free)
250 1.4 Ghz 256 MB Standard HD
1000 2.0 Ghz 512 MB Standard HD
5000 Dual 1.8 Ghz Xeon P4 512 MB Off-board SCSI RAID Array, RAID 0/0+1/5
10,000 Dual 2.0 Ghz Xeon P4 1 GB Off-board SCSI RAID Array, RAID 0/0+1/5
25,000 Dual 2.4 Ghz Xeon P4 2 GB Off-board SCSI RAID Array, RAID 0/0+1/5
50,000 Quad 2 Ghz Xeon P4 2 GB Off-board SCSI RAID Array, RAID 0/0+1/5
75,000 Quad 2.4 Ghz Xeon P4 4 GB Off-board SCSI RAID Array, RAID 0/0+1/5
125,000 8-way 3 Ghz Xeon P4 8 GB 3 Off-board SCSI RAID Arrays, RAID 0/0+1/5

Note: These numbers are provided for reference and will vary depending on a number of factors specific to each deployment. Before deployment, please consult with a BigFix support technician before deployment to better determine the hardware requirements for your network.

Note: If there will be more than 5-10 simultaneous BES Console users connecting to the main BES Server, you will need to get a more powerful computer than the ones listed to handle the additional load.

BES Console Requirements

As the number of BES Clients increase, the BES Console computers will need to be more powerful to handle the vast amounts of data about the computers, Fixlets, actions, etc.

This table is the recommended BES Console system requirements based on the number of managed computers (if a BES Console operator only can manage 5,000 BES Clients in a 50,000 BES Client network, use the requirements for 5,000 and not for 50,000).

# of BES Clients managed CPU RAM
250 1.0 Ghz 256 MB
5000 2.0 Ghz 512 MB
25,000 2.4 Ghz 1 GB
50,000 3.0 Ghz 2 GB
75,000 Dual 2.4 Ghz 2 GB
125,000 Dual 3.0 Ghz 4 GB
Note: If you are planning installing the BES Console on a remote server (such as Citrix) for multiple BES Console operators, check with a BES Technician for server specifications.
